  • Louisiana Democrats have filed a Federal Elections Commission complaint that a $5K donation to Sen. David Vitter from Gov. Barbour’s PAC had originated with Chip Pickering’s PAC and was therefore really from him, and thus improper.  Ipse Blogit has the complaint (and also had the first mention of the contribution) and says it charges the PACs, not Barbour or Vitter individually (it does name Pickering and the PAC directors), and alleges these improprieties:

1.  Making a Contribution in the Name of Another
2.  Permitting Your Name to be Used in a Conduit Scheme
3.  Accepting a Contribution in the Name of Another
4.  Individuals who Assisted in Making a Contribution in the Name of Another

  • The Clarion Ledger has an article quoting the head of the Louisiana Democrats (who says “a circumstantial case can be made that a violation occurred. He cited the lack of other contributions reported in August on Haley Barbour’s report and Pickering’s ties to the governor.”) and the head of Barbour’s PAC, his nephew Austin (who says “All I can say is the Louisiana Democratic Party must be desperate and looking for a campaign issue,” Henry Barbour said Monday. “There’s no truth in it. Haley has given money to many different Republican candidates and is supportive of David Vitter. That’s the beginning and end of this.”).
  • Kingfish reports that the Pogue and Dedousis families have filed suit against Karen and Stuart Irby, seeking $10M in actual damages for each death, plus $20M in punitive damages. Kingfish has the complaint here. John Booth Farese signed the complaint.  The complaint alleges a negligent entrustment claim against Stuart Irby, and alleges that both he and Karen knew that she would occasionally unpredictably have blackouts, in addition to alleging she was intoxicated.
  • Lafayette County Coroner Lonnie Weaver, who resigned as a police officer and as president of the state coroner’s association earlier this year in the wake of charges he’d misapproriated $5000 from the state coroner’s association, has resigned as county coroner after about 20 years in office. There will be a special election to finish his term next year.
  • I enjoyed this uncharacteristic piece from Stanley Fish, in praise of the small town where he has a second home and puzzlement about why it is so pleasant.
