An Annette Bening scene from American Beauty comes irresistibly to mind ….

Destroy it … well … sure. But somebody’s gotta keep an archival copy. Otherwise the world will never know what was destroyed. Was it destroyed in part, or destroyed in whole? These questions aren’t capable of being answered authoritatively without proof.

    And the tape destroyed another.

There was a case about twenty years ago where a minister’s wife left an audio tape running (such was the state of technology back then) under their bed in the parsonage, and it caught only the audio of the good pastor and a prominent member of the choir exclaiming boisterously (and taking the Lord’s name in vain, but in an earnest way) during a similar interlude. The audio was burned in an oil drum in the church parking pursuant to a negotiated settlement, but, as Ben suggests at 8:40 above, “archival” copies remained, and most adult congregation members had, by then (or at least claimed by then to have) heard it. Lesson: It’s not the sex that’s so irresistible in these circumstances (it’s always commonplace, due to the fact that there are only a few basic variations upon such a routine and pedestrian practice), but the hypocrisy. The hypocrisy is always riveting!
