There were three stories worth mentioning in the Oxford Eagle Yesterday.
- Alyssa Scnugg’s story about the double murder gets best headlined KILLER STILL ON THE LOOSE. There is very little detail emerging about the case, except that the motive was apparently robbery.
- Alyssa also wrote about the Bost gas cannon and the neighbors. She brings the wildly inflated petition number down to reasonable size– the Memphis TV station said over two hundred had signed it, and Alyssa says 58. Sheriff East tries sympathizes with everyone: “’Everyone involved is good people,’ East said. “One side is just trying to sleep and the other side is just trying to make a living.’”
- Finally, the Lyric Theater failed to get a marquee approved by the Oxford Planning Commission. The Lyric’s owners had got their proposal through the Historic Preservation Commission, and was now looking for planning approval but lost by a tie vote. I’m reproducing a photo of the original from when it was a movie theater below from the oxfordfilmfreak blog, which is written by Melanie Addington, who wrote the Eagle article. The picture is from the premiere of Intruder in the Dust, 60 years ago this Fall. I gather the main difference between this one and the proposal is that the proposal includes signage they can change based on who is performing.

Speakin’ of killers and farmers … the Farmer’s Market store on Old 7N has some killer cherries in stock today. Had to get a reload on the Brown’s Family Farm milk … the cherries are right there by the checkout counter … I cadged one while waiting to check out … bought 3 lbs. of cherries.
Call me curious and I’m not a lawyer, but wouldn’t SEC. 97-35-9. Disturbance by explosions, noises or offensive conduct, http://www.mscode.com/free/statutes/97/035/0009.htm and http://www.mscode.com/free/statutes/97/035/0007.htm
appear to be in play. Unless the good Sheriff and DA are eating tomatoes pretty regularly. Especially with that many folks complaining.
And it ain’t working (because the cannons don’t work). If it was, they wouldn’t have to do it all the time because all the deer would be in the next county over by now.
That is really too bad about the Lyric sign. I was excited about it. I would be pretty upset if I were them.
