Anyone who’s lived in Oxford any length of time knows it as Kiame’s, although The Lane’s bowling alley has had a different name & owner for some time. During the middle of the night last night, it burned, and, when I went by this morning on my way to the Square, it looked a total loss. The fire used enough water to disrupt water service all the way to the Square.

Rewind to a conversation I had with my college age son two days ago. Somehow we were talking about the way the Oxford Fire Depart. operates and I pointed out to him that anytime there is any kind of a fire on the Square, OFD rolls everything because it would only take a snap of the fingers for a small fire to get out of control and consume a quarter of the Square or more.
Then I pointed out that restaurants are prone to fires, especially in a bad economy — seems like whenever eateries began losing money there’s always a “fire in the kitchen” that closes the place. As more and more restaurants open on and around the Square, a big fire on the Square may be inevitable.
Did the Lanes go out of business? I drove by yesterday (obviously before the burn) and all the signage was down (as you’ll see in the photo). The fire would seem suspicious if the Lanes was shuttered at the time of the incident but, on the other hand, perhaps it started at the Brass Monkey. That bar/restaurant appeared open as of yesterday. Perhaps the Ox Eagle will have something…
I’m on Observor’s side with this one.
Coulda at least had the decency to coordinate it with a dark and stormy night.
Our water is still off color. Anyone know what is causing the discoloration? Is it safe to drink?
Dishwater–I gotta theory about the discounted water: it’s because Uranus is so near. Haw haw haw.
Picture not available but use your imagination.
Uranus appears in true colors, left, and false colors, right in images produced by combining numerous pictures taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The false colors emphasize bands of smog around the planet’s south pole. The small spots are shadows of dust specks in the camera.
Jlw, the bowling alley has been closed for a couple of weeks.
Word on the street, it was in foreclosure. BUT that’s RUMINT (Rumor Intelligence), so afford weight accordingly.
Speaking of fire, I awoke to a large brush fire next to my house, spreading quickly into the dense, tinder-dry woods and clearly on its way to becoming a major threat. My damn fool neighbor burned something in his yard last night and we’re very lucky it didn’t spread sooner. As in, while we slept.
Even more priceless–instead of calling 911, this meshugena evidently squirted at it with his garden hose this morning, then hid in the house, no doubt forecasting trouble. We’ll talk later, me and him.
There is currently no burn ban in place for Lafayette County. I’ve contacted my elected representative, and would encourage any Oxford-area readers to push for it as well. It’s so dry the leaves have wilted and fallen, creating even more tinder, and there’s no significant rain anywhere in the forecast. Open flames on the ground? Here, hold this fuel-filled bottle while I stuff the lit rag in there.
Wow. I just heard back from a County Supervisor, who says they already started paperwork and expect the burn ban approval from the Forestry Commission any day now. Quick response!
@armyvet_lawstudent Wow, who is your Supervisor? That’s great news. As far as your neighbor is concerned, set off something loud around 4:00 AM. There’s no noise ordinance in the county the last time I checked.
I heard the bowling alley was on the verge of being rented by someone out of Tupelo (Rebel Lanes?) and the fire started in the Brass Monkey. I’m sure we’ll never know. They still don’t know what happened with the Gin.
