What is the most embarrasing defeat in Ole Miss football history?

Before today I would have said a Southern game in the Archie Manning era.

Discuss.

did not know that Ole Miss played Southern during Archie’s days–Southern University is in Baton Rogue–Are you referring to when Southern Miss beat Archie–that was an outstanding win for the Generals ( that was prior to becoming Eagles)

Today is ‘way up there. BTW … I was taking the LSAT in the old law school while USM was beating Archie and the Rebels that day. Bill Champion kept coming in and updating the score on the blackboard.

  • I was a freshman when Archie lost to Southern. They had a little running back named Willie Heidelberg that had a career day against us. I recall he score as being 31-14.
It was so disappointing because we were ranked #2 preseason by Sports Illustrated and Archie was on the cover of the College football edition. Of course Archie broke his arm against Houston in the homecoming game, we lost to State on Thanksgiving Day, lost to LSU in Tiger Stadium 61-17 with Archie playing with a full cast on his broken left arm, and lost to Auburn in the Gator Bowl. All in all a very disappointing season.

I can’t think of one since Ive been following Ole Miss. About 8 years. The J’Ville coach was fired from Arkansas after losing to a D-two school. Nutt better make up for this.

Rebs overconfident and out of condition. The overconfidence is now cured. But the lack of athletic conditioning will kill us this year. Being unconditioned is unforgivable and it rests squarely on the coaching staff’s shoulders. No excuses. Too late now to get in condition. Better just assume the BOHICA position … Bend Over Here It Comes Again.

For a man so eager to impress others with your wealth of knowledge, you may shock yourself (but no one else) to discover that Southern was never the Generals. They were the “Southerners” before their transmogrification to Eagles, but never the Generals.

You can look it up … but I’m confident you won’t.

  • Good day to be a Bulldog!

And we don’t get many of those.

  • … Ben, can you explain the “lack of conditioning” bit? To this duffer, that sounds awfully elementary for a team to lack.

  • What'sUp

Tulane beating Ole Miss in the 1950s was the worst football memory of my earlier years.

    This one hurts too.
Probably set our 2011 recruiting back severely.
But I remain immeasurably more concerned that character-building was compromised by the coaching staff, athletic administration and university administration so zealously and self-righteously seeking after ‘flawed goods from the West Coast’ to help us win.
It wasn’t enough and there may be a lesson in that.

  • I think the ass-kicking Johnson’s Hurricane’s caused his firing. The Citadel loss was just the last straw.

Being such a young guy, the worse for me was the tie to Arkansas State in, I think, 1986 and the 1987 loss to Memphis State, just after Playboy named the Rebels as the dark horse pick to win the national championship.

Anderson, the only good day I can think of to be a Bulldog is February 13, 1981.
Unless, of course, you mean a canine Bulldog…

–Sorry Ben–I am getting old and my memory fades–Our mascot was General Nat (Nathan B Forrest) but the nick name was Southerners–you are most wise and knowledgeable. By the way I will acknowledge that USM’s mascot was even more racist than the Colonel.

What mascot will Colonel Red transmogrificate into? Surely it will not not be a Landshark (?) or a Muppet Hotty Toddy or a bear (sorry don’t understand the bear).

Mascots … ascots. I don’t need or want either.

    But two things I know:

    1. Our football team sucks. Big time. And they’re unconditioned for 60 minutes of football.

    2. Virginia Tech’s Nike-designed football uniforms are the suckiest I’ve ever seen. NCAA wants to sanction some school for something?–Sanction VPI for making those kids wear those god-awful orange and black attires.

  • Not such a good night after Thursday night for the BullPups…Now you can equate with a loss you know you should have won…dropped passes…dropped interceptions…Damn I hate it when that happens.
