There’s a story in today’s Oxford Eagle following up on the telephone calls to Oxford Aldermen. Apparently, three were called and offered contributions to their favorite causes in return for a “yes” vote. Alderman Mayo is asking the mayor to call the F.B.I. about those calls (hint to the city: You could call the local district attorney).
There’s also a story about the Humane Society shutting down a puppy mill in Union County for animal cruelty. The conditions there sound horrific. The puppies are now in the Oxford shelter, awaiting adoption.
The front of Oxford Town is all about the Ford Center’s upcoming Marvin Hamlish concert. Isn’t the programming at the Ford Center so exiting? This is the biggest thing going out there since they had Sandy Duncan.

The puppies are adorable. I wasn’t going to adopt one when I got there, but I decided to go for it! I hope I get approved. I have no reasons not to, but they have had over 60 applications since the bust.
Also, check out this letter( http://tinyurl.com/nlzc6b ) was in The DM today. It’s written by the owner of Taylor’s Pub, next to NMC’s office.
I tend to agree with Plunk. If the aldermen are going to make these allegations public, then they should seek a DA investigation.
I understand Kenny G is coming to the Ford Center next month.
Oxford Town could have helped with the Oxford Jim Dickinson benefit at Proud Larrys. 27 local bands and the Oxford newspaper ignored it, other than 3 words in small font on the calendar. Instead, they had a half-page on an event in Clarksdale.
Same with the Yocona River Inn benefit the week before. Three top-notch local bands at Proud Larrys and Oxford Town gave the Oxford event four words in small font on the calendar. That week they also had, instead, a half-page on an event in Clarksdale.
Damn shame about the lack of PR for these worthy causes. Don’t know how I missed the YRI benefit, and definitely sad about that. As someone who HAS to line up babysitters, I need as much advance notice as possible.
Marvin Hamlisch is a great, or at least very good, songwriter. A quote from his wikipedia entry: “He is one of only two people to have been awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony, a Golden Globe and a Pulitzer Prize (the other is Richard Rodgers).”
That is an impressive career by any measure. Plus, he wrote “The Way We Were” sung by Barbara Streisand and “Nobody Does It Better” sung by Carly Simon for the James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me”.
I couldn’t tell whether you were being facetious, NMC, but Hamlisch is a great musician and wonderful composer and songwriter.
I GOT ONE OF THE PUPPIES!! I am so excited. You know its true what they say, sometimes good things happen out of bad situations.
I have a male Chihuahua from the puppy mill who grew old in a wire-bottomed cage. All four feet are horribly splayed and he has no leg muscles to speak of. He can barely walk and watching him try to urinate would be funny if it didn’t break your heart. You can tell this little guy never spent much time on a real floor–a lifetime on wire mesh has really done a number on him. The dogs used as breeders get the worst of it. He’s well on his way to being spoiled rotten now.
I’m so glad the puppies are going fast–today they still had dachsunds, adorable pups, and a couple of adults. They have a ton of applications, buy many are for one or two dogs. There are quite a few in foster care. Still plenty of dogs that need homes!
Armyvet: You’ve seen those charity events where you can buy sledgehammer swings on an old car … the Oxford animal shelter should sell swings on those creatures who run puppy mills. I’ll buy a $100 supply of swings right now.
I was being completely facetious and appalled, WTBAL.
How do you bust a puppy mill?
Busting a puppy mill is difficult. 8 years ago my wife and I went to buy a cairn terrier. We asked to see the father. The owner put us on a 4 wheeler and drove us down to a run. We found three males and a dead female that had been in heat. To make matters worse, she had been dead a couple days because it had rained on her. It was awful. The puppy mill was located south of Jackson and sold high end peek a poos. It wasn’t the worst puppy mill, and was probably borderline, but the dead female was too much for us.
The owner emailed us an apology for seeing the dead dog. I printed the email, and wrote a memorandum for the attorney general. In my mind, with us as witnesses, and the email, we had enough to shut them down. The AG’s office did nothing. I never got a response back after submitting my email.
In response to Chico Harris – both the Town and Oxford Eagle previewed the event. We would love to do a follow up to let the community know how much money was raised for Jim as well. Would you like to do a follow up?
Rescued a cavalier from a puppy mill in Arkansas a few weeks go. 5 year old Blenheim. Poor thing didn’t even know how to eat out of a dog bowl. Took him three weeks to learn, we had to feed him by hand until he figured it out. Doesn’t know how to play but is a great lap dog and would hit his front legs every time he took a leak he was so used to not being clean. Could tell by marks on his tail where his hair had been real matted because it was nicked several times. Wasn’t malnourished or anything, just neglected and ignored socially. Now has been living with brother and four kids and realizes he got a good gig. First slept for 18-20 hours a day for the first few weeks, now is getting more active.
God knows how many pit bulls tied to trees died in Jackson during this awful freeze. I finally called animal control about the one down the street from me. It was gone about a week later.
