Internet speculation linking Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt with the Colorado job has picked up steam this evening, some reports saying Nutt will be named the CU coach Monday.
A few minutes ago Nutt responded to a text message and said the reports were “not true.” Asked if he anticipated being the coach at Ole Miss next season, Nutt responded, “yes.”
Nutt has a news conference at Ole Miss set for 2 p.m. tomorrow. It was scheduled last week as a matter of closing the door on the 2010 season and looking ahead. Earlier this evening Ole Miss media relations sent a text message saying the nature of tomorrow’s press conference and team meeting are both “routine.”
One has to wonder what’s up; here’s what the Clarion Ledger’s Ole Miss sports blog is reporting, saying that Nutt told the team his plans today, and will anounce them in public at the press conference tomorrow:
Coach Houston Nutt added the intrigue when he was asked after the game what sort of items he wants to address after the season. “There’s a few things,” he said. “I’m going to get into that Sunday. I just — I want to talk to my team first before they read it. I want them to hear it first.”
I grow very tired of the “will he stay or will he go” speculation about college coaches. Here are a couple of songs that seem on point to me. The song I mean in the first is starting about 2:10. For those wondering, that would be Earl Scruggs and circa 1969 Byrds (with Roger McGuin and Clarence White, among others).
