Does anyone know where one can legally download a copy of “Hearts Of Darkness: A FIlmaker’s Apocalypse” by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper? Don’t really want to buy it on DVD but I think it would be appropriate for New Years Eve. (I’m wanting to purchase a legal download like iTunes or Amazon but haven’t found one so far.)

  • new year plans.. driving back and forth between the homeplace in Mississippi and home in Alabama.

  • Chico Harris

Tyler Keith and George McConnell bands at Proud Larrys.

  • Ben

You won’t wanna miss the “Three Stooges” marathon on AMC New Years Day.

Is this a great country or what?

My family is going to spend New Year’s Eve in a Hilton somewhere. I need one more night to stay Gold, plus I think I will get 25,000 bonus points for a promotion I signed up for. The kids will get to go swimming, and I’ll be about 27,000 points closer to that 6-night stay anywhere in the world.

  • Anderson

I plan to sit down when shots are fired.

Am I the only one who haaaates New Year’s Eve? Isn’t it so weird how there’s so much pressure as to what you’re doing at ‘exactly’ midnight?? Who cares, why does it matter?! ugh.

NYE is always a horrid night for me. Tooth knocked out, been stood up, met my ex husband.. all KINDS of reasons to just stay home now.

National Couch Night as far as I’m concerned.

  • JaneT

I hate New Years’ Eve too. My plan is to stay in and avoid all the people who are hell bent on making the roads more dangerous than usual. Of course, that’s my plan for just about every night.

And tv on New Years’ Eve thoroughly sucks.

I’m going to try Susan Spicer’s recipie for Crawfish Pie, and dring a “good” bottle of wine. Any suggestions? I live in Jackson, so my selection is limited, but I’m willin to spend up to $25.!

  • I plan to leave work a little early and fire up a batch of oliebollen to bring to a small get-together tonight with friends.

I love my Dutch heritage, but my endocrinologist sure hates it.

  • Crispin Garcia

Hambone @ 10:50 in that price range I suggest the A for Acacia or the La Crema Pinot Noir or the La Crema Chardonnay.

p.s. On it’s last night in business, I’m going to the Jazz Funeral Dinner and New Year’s Eve festivities at the Bistro on Park.

    Rob:

I see oliebol (oil balls) are also called smoutebollen (lard balls).

They look and the recipe reads like New Orleans beignets. Do they go with cafe au lait?

    my plans:

I’m beginning to think I’ll be at home, cooking a shrimp/lemon/garlic/linguine dish of my own devising, and making Red Hook Cocktails, which are rye, vermouth, and maraschino liqueur (which is bitter and I have on hand because it’s used in papa doubles). Seems like a close sibling to a Manhattan, and I’m curious about it. Dinner will also have turkey gumbo and possibly my take on Galatoire’s crabmeat maison. Not sure about dessert.

the suggestion upthread of the La Crema wines is a good one. My wife is permanently affixed on La Crema chardonnay as the thing to drink.

N.Y. Yankees news: You want even more proof the NEW YORK YANKEES will win the World Series in 2010? Tonight is a blue moon. That doesn’t happen again on New Year’s Eve until 2028. When the NEW YORK YANKEES win the World Series in 2010, it will be their 28th championship.

One more thing about Christmas: I wish I had been at this Christmas parade in Guatemala. If I can get the freako Ronald McDonald/Joker guy at 0:01:27 to come, I’ll have a party!

  • NMC

Chico, your Yankees comment is making about as much sense as Robert’s comments.

  • RoyClaude

I plan on getting off in a mud hole with my 4 wheel drive and a case of beer. Got to love soybean fields in the winter time.

  • Hubby will be working (God bless the hospitality industry), so I’ll be taking down Christmas decorations, eating leftovers, and packing my suitcase for the Cotton Bowl. Hotty Toddy! Happy New Year.

Garry Burnside and the Burnside Exploration just confirmed for Parrish’s tonight.

Hambone, add $15 to your budget and buy a bottle of Ken Wright Pinot Noir, preferably from the Macrone Vineyard (it will be listed on the label — second choice, same wine but from the Shea vineyard). You won’t believe it. Melts in your mouth in a most delightful way, and seems to evaporate there (after making a remarkable impression) without reaching your throat. Should go well with the crawfish. I have no connection to the winery, am just knocked out by how good this stuff is. They used to have it at Kats.

Happy New Year to all..may the teens fare much better than the 1st decade of the new century. Tonite me and the missus will sit down to pot of venison ropa vieja, some cold adult beverages, and a bonfire in the backyard, hopefully accompanied w/ some snow flurries. Tom, and everyone else, please keep this party going next year. It’s only a small part of my day, but almost always an enjoyable part…thanks to all and again..Happy New Year

  • Fishwater

Let the napping begin. Happy New Year everyone!!!

Sez here AT&T and most other sponsors are dropping Tiger Woods. So I’m nominating myself to those sponsors as Tiger’s replacement. Come on … they’re just gonna piss all that money away on someone … might as well be a striking sea dog such as I. Yall be watchin’ for me.

  • TR Gentry

Whatever one does, don’t drink and drive and end up like Mr. Turner.

  • Robert

That’s bad Chico because my comments make as much sense as those of Mr. Hood. I think Ben’s got the best idea of all. yunk, yunk. Slabbed got an early start with curly taking the oath. Give it to me to recall one show where the three played attorneys, Dewey, Cheatem and howl. or something like that.

  • NMC

It’s “How” not “Howl” Robert, and you’re not making any more sense there.

  • carter

for wine, and I know this is waaayyy too late, but I found this white at Martin Wine Cellar in NOLA: Errazuriz Wild Ferment Chardonnay. Then the fallback white: King Estates Pinot Gris (or Grigio–I can’t remember).

  • Robert

Was it How? Ha ha! That was was Jane’s spelling, but we both have the same problem now. and she compeleted school. I’ve got it worse. For some reason our spelling even when it’s correct just doesn’t look right. Not as bad as traveling 9 miles to the store and not remembering what for. It was a hell of an acid trip. I mean something in my head. I’m big on forgiving myself for things not of my own making. Hepey neu yiar. sense compaired to??

Open thread, Open thread? it’s 10:20 pm.CST.Whats up? Going out, passed out or been drinking with concerns to blog out. How many drinking bloggers would love to blog related New Years thoughts. Fireworks in the background I’m awaiting a 12:00 am.earth shaddering ka boom. My New Years resolution at 16 was to never have a new years resolution. Things like that work ya sha.

Rob Huten (11:56 am comment yesterday) said he was making oilebollen (“oil balls!”) for New Years Eve, and he puts video proof on you tube. He also posts a recipe, which, with the exception of the addition of vanilla and the optional apples and raisins, really does strongly resemble beignets.

  • Tom – everyone loves deep-fried dough, it seems. As to oliebollen going with cafe au lait, I’m not sure what my Calvinist stront boertje ancestors would think of such a luxury. I washed down an embarrassing number of oliebollen today with suitably un-fancy Tim Hortons coffee.
