Help me remember: Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggert, cousins? Either kin to Tammy Faye Bakker? Jim Bakker? Mississippi’s so very complicated.
Jerry Lee, Swaggert, and Mickey Gilley all were cousins– I think first cousins– growing up in Ferriday, Louisiana, across the river from Natchez, and learned to play a similar sort of barrelhouse piano on the same upright belonging to Jerry Lee’s folks. It’s my understanding that Jerry Lee has the piano at his home.
As one of my friends once noted, “That’s one stressed piano.”
