As the title notes, Jon Langford of the Mekons will be on Thacker March 1st. He apparently noted that the date is appropriate because it’s the Saints Day of the patron saint of Wales.
Here’s an interview with Langford about the Mekons, who Lester Bangs once called better than the Beatles. The interview starts:
It’s likely that you either love the Mekons, or you haven’t heard of them at all. Formed as a punk band in Leeds in 1977, the sprawling lineup has remained more or less the same since the mid-’80s. Their sound spans multiple genres, among them American rock and roll and roots music. (They are, in fact, credited with producing the first alt-country album.) If you go to a Mekons show, expect to see some incredibly ardent fans, every music critic in town, and an energetic performance from all on stage.
Langford will be coming solo, and we’re hoping to see some of his art (pictured above). Below is some of his music.

EXTRAORDINARY. Ranks up there with other guests on Thacker like Elvis Costello, David Byrne and Charlie Musselwhite.
So what is the first Mekons album I should buy?
Great. Thanks for posting this.
Great clip. Thanks, NMC
Probably Curse of the Mekons, Anderson.
Rock & Roll, which is one of their two attempts at being on a major label, is very well liked.
Oxford has another talent in town for a month, 20-year-old Jeff Beck protegee Tyler Bryant. He has been on the road for a long time opening for and playing with Beck and he plays free tonight and the next three Monday nights at Proud Larrys.
