This afternoon, Judge Davidson sentenced Bobby DeLaughter to 18 months (and granted his request that he ask the Bureau of Prisons for either Montgomery or Pensacola).
There was no real news. DeLaughter’s lawyer, Tom Durkin, apologized, which DeLaughter repeated in his brief statement. In imposing sentence, Judge Davidson stated, “I conclude your relationship with Mr. Peters was strange.” He noted that he was not imposing a fine because DeLaughter was unable to pay due to his negative net worth. The sentence was above the guidelines amount and the maximum that could be imposed while accepting the plea agreement. DeLaughter is to report January 4th.
Outside the courthouse while everyone waited, Beckwith’s son, who showed up again, talked to the press.
When Tom Durkin spoke, he said a few interesting things:
If there was anything wrong with the relationship with Peters, it was that Bobby DeLaughter didn’t throw him out of his courtroom and chambers.
It is an odd fact that Bobby DeLaughter is going to jail and Ed Peters has gone fishing.
At least in Chicago, what we do is trace the money and the money went to Ed Peters not Bobby DeLaughter.
Any reporter who spares a drop of ink on Beckwith’s musings ought to be ashamed. He’s not part of the story. Period.
Any chance of Peters writing a book? How long would he have to wait?

I just don’t buy that Bobby’s broke. All those favors. One in particular, move the civil era house balloon note etc. But what do I know? Heck it’s time to go fishing Mr. Durkin. Ljm, what am I wrong about? To my knowledge my beef with DeLaughter didn’t include bribry by Peters. Unless it included money from this. My beef with DeLaughter had to do with. In August 1998,attorneys and the Hinds County Court accepted an $84 million dollar offer from Vickeburg Chemical filed in my name. In early 1999 the court and attorneys held a trial to join awards gain with others for a trial representing the class. The trial failed. Hello!
After the failed trial all awards were then place on my family of three. A known $276 million and untold amounts unknown with documents seeking $2 billion. Rather settle our loss including our home and injury. The action was placed under another judge after settlement in October 1998, then tansferred to DeLaughter in 2006 and claimed dismissed by him. The Masterful Court of Magical jurisidiction now claims that our claims were released in January 1998 and we get nothing.
As far as I’m concerned with documents in hand, 1. The documents of settlement actions,CMO,trial news reports are real. Or theres a lot of people in Hinds County and else where taken a lot of time to piss me off, as I do know the injuries and loss are real. I doubt seriuosly DeLaughter has any actual connection to our claims as they were settled long ago which excluded any action to dismiss. But did you have someone in mind?

Robert, you are wrong in your conclusion that Delaughter is not broke & your conclusion that he has EVER been on the take. He has never been indicted for bribery, never convicted of bribery, never admitted to bribery. I know that’s not what y’all want to believe but, nevertheless, those are the facts. As for your case, Robert, everyone is well informed about it. Your attorney used you to bring a class action suit for which he took home a nice settlement and you got pocket change. Unfortunately, that’s the way our tort laws work. Don’t blame Delaughter or any other judge for that. Blame the tort lawyers who keep fighting to make sure those laws stay unchanged. Dickie Scruggs was one of them. But so is Merkel, Wilson & the others who so piously stand up to condemn Delaughter. Delaughter’s crime was allowing friendship to blind him to the truth of his friends activity. Those fine, holier than thou attorneys who took your money did it knowingly and deliberately. Does “legal” make that right?

This might be the understatement of the year. There was a hell of a lot more wrong with that unholy relationship than this lawyer’s characterization.

Odd indeed. Now, exactly when does Peters’ federal witness protection end? He may need to hire a private body guard as a fishing buddy. He’s seriously wronged a LOT of people, and made a LOT of enemies.

Good lord, while MS has its faults, we sure don’t need a lesson from anyone or thing having to do with dysfunctional Chicago. As just one example, last time I checked, Blago was still loose and unconvicted ( I told you all last year that I strongly suspected that the feds/ prosecution intentially ended/botched the investigation when it started leading to places they did not want it to go —appears I was right).
What about an Ed Peters book title contest? I would nominate UNAWARE OF THE CROOKS AROUND ME and as a subtitle: “It Became My Christian Duty to Turn Them In”.
