Petra open tonight! Grand opening 2/14

Petra Cafe, which has been in a tiny space down on Jackson Avenue, is opening its new space, at 1011 Jackson Avenue (where Wiley’s Shoe Shop / Parish’s / Taylor’s Pub were located, between my office and Two Stick) is opening tonight.

Their menu– Middle Eastern cooking (hummus, dolmas, falafel, kibbeh, chicken shawerma, gyro, shish kababob) is similar to the menu they’d had, and they have a brown-bag license.

Best kibbeh ever was at Monsour’s Resturant in Vicksburg…long time ago

  • I used to go to Monsour’s in another life. I wish Petra well, but he actually had a pretty good business with low overhead where he was. He said the health department was giving him fits, though.

Petra couldn’t do what was required in the old location, squeezed between health requirements and landlord demands. Give him a chance in the new location.

My favorite kibbeh Marie’s, but I live in the here and now, and the one at Petra is really fine. Tonight, the hummus and tilapia (of which I am not ordinarily a fan) were exemplary, and I enjoyed the steak shish kabob). And I brought in a 12 year old bottle of Argentine cabernet that cost me, what $10? back then, and I hate to think what it would cost me in a restaurant, now. So, all in all, an enjoyable experience. Check it out.

  • I’ve been pretty regular at Petra and of course I will give him a chance! I was just pointing out that financially the dynamic is very different. There is a huge chance for drop-in business now that he didn’t have before.

Folks like you and me will love the brown bag policy, but I can’t help but wonder if that isn’t going to cost a lot of revenue, but in terms of lost sales and from people who want a drink but don’t have their own bottle.
