This article on the Epicurious blog suggests so, and that it’s part of a trend:
Alabama raised the maximum amount in beer from 6 percent to 13.9 percent this year; West Virginia from 6 percent to 12 percent.
Last year, Vermont said it was OK for brewers to create beer with 16 percent alcohol content by volume, and Montana raised the max to 14 percent. (The average beer contains 4.65 percent alcohol, an average wine 11.45 percent.)
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio all passed similar changes to the law from 2002 to 2007. Iowa and Mississippi are eyeing the possibility of joining the pack.
Making this change would allow beers from Belgian and craft beers that are not allowed at present into the state.
Well, that does it for work today. I’m going for a beer. Thanks, NMC!
I can think of no legislative action that would make me happier. It sucks
that I have to go out-of-state to get Duval or Chimay beer. I saw an ad in the
Clarion-Ledger a while back about a group here in MS that supports this type
of legislation, but I can’t remember their name. Does anyone know?
No, Plexix … I don’t know the supporters’ name. But I know the names of the usual suspects who will oppose it.

I was wondering out loud why there’s so little German beer for sale, despite the obvious assonance of “German” and “beer,” and someone said it was b/c of the alcohol content.
So if that’s true, another reason why this is a good idea.
That’s it, Delta Fred…..Raise your pints Mississippi. Thanks. They have been placing
ads in newspapers about their efforts.
I’m pretty sure that state senator David Baria is one of the supporters of this legislation.
Sen. Baria has sponsored the bill the last two years I believe, but it has died in the Senate Finance Committee.
Dammit I want my fucking Spaten Optimator without having to drive all the way to Calandros.
Yeah, I really have trouble getting drunk on beer!
Sixteen percent alcohol equals 32 proof! That’s about like drinking a 12 oz. scotch on the rocks when you account for the ice melting.
I’d like to try a sixpack of that. Of course, I think I have, I just don’t remember it.
Yep, David Baria is all about higher alcohol content. We have a ridiculously low percentage here…I hate driving to Memphis to get good beer! It would be nice if home brewing wasn’t illegal here too…but I guess one thing at a time.
Want to point out that there is an excellent microbrewery in David’s district which is currently putting out some wonderful local brew–Southern Pecan is my favorite from the husband and wife team at Lazy Magnolia Brewery located in the Kiln.
Sixteen percent alcohol is 8 proof, not 32. You halve it, not double it. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_proof
Sailor that pecan concoction sounds lovely! Will have to try some
DeltaLawMama:
That microbrew’s best market is Oxford. Southern Pecan is readily available in City Grocery, Snack Bar, etc.
I’m glad Lazy Magnolia is around, but I feel kind of bad for them. (I don’t know the brewers personally, but I can only imagine that they are quite limited in their choices.) I think Oxford could easily support a microbrewery, but if I were going to start one (which I wouldn’t, but I know a handful of people who actually would), I wouldn’t do it in Mississippi. Not with the laws how they are now. NOT TO MENTION, most larger breweries start out with home brewing, which is apparently so evil that it must be outlawed.
This story is getting some traction…..from today’s Hattiesburg American:

I am so glad that Sen. Joey Fillingane is looking out for my best interests in not
letting me purchase beer over 6%. WHO KNOWS what might happen if I drank a Chimay!
I MIGHT GO CRAZY!
Seriously, when is MS going to join the modern era?
DLM, let me know what you think. For awhile it was only available in mini-keg portions, which I toted religiously to Knoxville TN at Christmas for the enjoyment of my father and brother-in-law. I’m not a big fan of “flavored” anything, be it raspberry beer or hazlenut coffee, however, this is made w/ toasted pecans.
Toasted pecans are magical.
Absolutely. NMC’s gonna kick us over to a food thread if we don’t hush up…when/if that happens I’ll share some of my favorite things to do w/ toasted pecans. BTW, current Southern Living has some good recipes.
Hey this is tagged as “food” sailor. Go right ahead!
Rebs win, Rebs win! Woo Hoo! Nothing sucks like big Orange!
