Your comment equating LBJ with Willie Stark is spot on. I’m not so sure Willie would have been an admirable character if only that hospital was better than substandard. Cspan also had a replay of Caro’s 1990 interview with Brian Lamb (boy I miss him) this weekend. Lamb asked if LBJ stole the 1948 senate election. Caro said he did without a doubt. Lamb then asked if LBJ stole the election intentionally.or something to that effect. Caro said he didn’t understand the question. When pressed, he said something like LBJ was so compulsive in his quest for power that intent was irrelevant or inconsequential. Where wiuold we be if LBJ had been our first president?
I admit with some shame that I’ve read none of the Caro books on LBJ, but your recent posts have inspired me to remedy that. Johnson certainly is a fascinating character who had an extraordinary life. I think my next purchase will be Volume I
I would love to hear the reactions of a psychologist to these books.
