I am Tom Freeland, a lawyer in Oxford, Mississippi. The picture in the header is my law office. I'm on Twitter as NMissC
I started (co)blogging as NMC in early 2008 on the Folo blog, (with coblogger Lotus); that blog went on hiatus in March, 2009. In 2005, I covered Fifth Circuit cases for the (now defunct) Appellate Law and Practice blog.

Accused murderer of Rodney Lockhart (Ole Miss tracks star) pleads to using his credit card

Christian Bonner, who was indicted for killing University of Mississippi track star Rodney Lockhart, was reindicted to charge eight mail fraud counts of using Lockhart’s credit card and one count of having an illegal phone in the county jail.  Yesterday, Paul Quinn at that Clarion Ledger reports, he entered a guilty plea to the mail fraud and phone charge.  Hils lawyer continued to assert he is innocent of the murder charge:

Bonner’s attorney, Kevin Camp of Jackson, said the defendant received Lockhart’s debit card from someone else who may be the killer.

Camp would not say how or when Bonner received the card.

“He used the debit card on the back end,” Camp said. “He did not kill Lockhart; that’s what he’s said from the beginning.

Thanks NMC, somehow I missed seeing this when I checked.

The AP also has a story about the David Jackson Williams appeal, seen here:

    http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20090707/NEWS/907070337/1002/news01/Man-convicted-of-murder-to-argue-for-new-trial

This was my first murder trial, and his argument is an interesting one. Judge Howorth agreed with Rev. Rencher (who is a great Episcopal priest here) not to allow him to testify. Jackson’s lawyer argued Bracey wasn’t a member of the church, and Rencher wasn’t working in his capacity as preacher when he advised her. Rencher, I believe, was working at the University has a counselor of some sort, and she came to him as a troubled student, with suicidal thoughts.

Jackson’s lawyer augured the jury should hear the testimony of Rencher, but lost that argument. I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know how the priest/parishioner relationship works.

Another interesting thing about the appeal is no mention of the pathologist testimony. Dr. Steven Hayne testified at trial, and another doc refuted everything he said. We’ll have to see if he’ll be tested once again.

  • Kevin Camp and Judge DeLaughter. In the same days postings. Damn how I’d like to repeat that. dots before my eyes? Did I mention I know Kevin? did I know no one cared ? Any way at least I know the rest of the story. Damn, dude I was that close huh? The method by which it slides by, huh? 99.99.0

That’s what he said from the beginning. Taking odds he’ll be saying the same thing in the end as well.

  • The murder case is still pending? If so, that’s an interesting strategy — admit to using the debit card, but deny the murder.

well, i was a student athlete at ole miss at the time of the murder and i knew rodney and bonner. The buzz around town at the time of the murder was that bonner didnt do it that another person, who was a member of the track team adn friend of lockhart murdered him, and he gave the card to bonner because they had a “relationship”
