Mayor Herenton in Memphis resigns as prep for congressional run
At a press conference in the last few minutes, reports the Commercial Appeal blog–
Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton just announced his resignation, effective July 10. He called his tenure as mayor the highlight of his professional career. He will go into business with his son, Rodney. He’s still planning to run for congress against incumbent Steve Cohen. He says he doesn’t want to serve as mayor and run for congress at the same time.
I almost made a joke headline, Memphis Mayor Resigns to Spend More Time with Family. This is looking like it might get really ugly.

Fueled with nothing more than gritty cynicism, I continue to suspect strongly that the steel fist of federal prosecution is slowly squeezing around Hizzonna. But I haven’t yet figgered out how his resignation can or might help him elude the law. He’s a wily one … he’s setting up a bank shot, I bet.
Pray for rain in Memphis and clear weather everywhere else on election day. Look at what the tribe did in New Orleans.
Who is “the tribe” and what did they do in NOLA?
No doubt he’s talking about the Cleveland Indians baseball team. Or perhaps one of my favorite bands that played in Oxford a good bit back in the day when I was a student at Ole Miss — Tribe Nunzio.
