Sending out Bessie Smith “Gimme A Pigfoot” to the Shady Nook north of Clarksdale…

In the comments to the post about the arrest of Dr. Weiner at the Shady Nook, Hambone mentioned that this brought to his mind a Bessie Smith song. I posting posting the great recording of “Gimme A Pigfoot,” from her last session (produced by John Hammond and with a backing band that included Bennie Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Chu Berry, Buck Washington). This struck me particularly because the Shady Nook is north of Clarksdale, and has to be a very, very short distance from where Smith had her fatal accident. So here’s the song.
